Cullera Castle
On the top of the Cullera Mountain , the most emblematic historical monument in the region of the Jucar river, Cullera Castle is an impressive fortress built over the ruins of a Moorish castle.
It was built during the Caliphate period (10th century ) with the purpose of controlling the coastline and the estuary of the Jucar river.
After King Jaime I conquered Cullera in the 13th century, he ordered a new castle to be built over the ruins of the Moorish castle and it was given to the Order of the Hospitallers Knights.
Today the castle has five towers and two fortified areas. It has been declared as Heritage site of Cultural Interest and since 1997 has housed the Municipal Museum of History and Archaeology of Cullera.
