Barrio de Ruzafa
Originally it was a recreational area and the gardens for the Muslim kings of Balansiya, between the tenth and thirteenth centuries. Its name comes from the Arabic word for garden.
After the Christian conquest the gardens were transformed into farmlands and the Muslim buildings transformed into farms. Ruzafa constituted an independent municipality until 1877.
Today, after a process of profound renewal, Ruzafa is the trendy area in the city of Valencia, a Valencian Soho that brings together dozens of races, religions, languages. It is a quiet neighborhood, as the town it used to be ages ago, before being swallowed by the big city.
In the last years bars and restaurants have multiplied in Ruzafa, with interesting art galleries, creative spaces and cafe-bookstores. The most interesting shops you can find are in this area, with terraces full of atmosphere and charm.
The best way to get to Ruzafa from the city center is by surrounding the bullring and crossing the Gran Vía to be in the heart of Ruzafa.
